Day 114 13 May 2009

On May 13, a jury of Mark Wigley, Barry Bergdoll, Michael Rock, Kate Orff, Damon Rich, Brian Loughlin, Mabel O. Wilson, and Bernard Tschumi gathered in the space of our sponsor, the Art Directors Club in New York, to deliberate over the competition entries to Imagining Recovery. An intense discussion developed over the four hours of deliberation, wherein the field was successively narrowed. Finally the jury reached a stalemate with ten entries remaining.

As a result of the openness of the issues raised by the competition, the jury felt it impossible to remove any one of the ten from being recognized as the projects which offered the collective best response to the brief. The jury has chosen to recognize each of these projects as collective competition “winners”.

The jury has selected three projects as outstanding in addressing what they believed to be the central tenet of the competition, the ability to communicate. These three projects will receive the prizes from Apple.

The three prize winning entries, in no specific order, were submitted by:

Jill Stoner and Marie Sorensen, David Ruperti and Andrew Miller, Benjamin Loeffler and Kathryn Spurr

The remaining seven entries selected by the jury were submitted by:

Leor Lovinger, Sharif Khalje, Gwendolyn MacFarland, David de Cespedes, Will Robinette, Zachary Colbert and Daniel Kidd, Matthew Lutz and Nicole Koltick

Congratulations to all winners!

A number of the competition entries have recently been profiled on Urban Omnibus, a project of the Architectural League of New York.
